Let It Roll Down the Highway

Hey, lovahs. If you can tear yourself away from the endless coverage of Michael Jackson's memorial service, stop over at Starpulse today for my latest post. I'm playing the role of pop cultural cartographer, charting a course for a summer road trip based on locations immortalized in TV and film. I know it's a pain in the ass (not really) to create a new user name, but please do, so you can comment all over me. I don't have any comments yet, and it's quite a blast of cold water on my ego, considering my last post about Adam Lambert caused the heavens to part and the angels to sing. (Of course, that may have had more to do with the glorious subject matter than my writing ability, but I will continue to lie to myself that it was the latter.)

Look, I even made an awesomely cheesy map! See that?? You have to comment now!

That map is definitely cheesetastic! I love the picture of Matthew McDouchey.

Waaaaaaa! Stupid gubmint firewall won't let me go to Starpulse. I suppose you'll have to settle for me telling you how awesome you are here.

YOU ARE AWESOME! And so is that map.

Be prepared to be underwhelmed by the "resort" in Virginia where Dirty Dancing was filmed. My wife has been there (one of her cousins graduated from Va. Tech and had his graduation party there) and said the "lake" was little more than a mud puddle.

Mjenks - Ah yes, I didn't mention it in the article, but the lake where the scenes of Baby and Johnny practicing the lift were filmed elsewhere. I think it was Lake Lure in North Carolina.

This is indeed sublime...but why is there nothing on the map for Pittsburgh?

I want you to know I attempted it, but our IT dept says No to that site. :( Sorry. If it helps, I got logged as trying to access an "inappropriate" site for you. :) I hope that heats the water a little.

If you're going from Iowa to Ohio you might want to stop in the north suburbs of Chicago to find the filming locations of just about every John Hughes movie from the '80s. They're well-documented on this site.

Love the map. I even learned something new, all this time I thought Shawshank was set in Maine. Isn't almost everything Stephen King writes set in Maine?

Nevermind, I get it now!

You're right. It is Lake Lure.

Apparently, if you stay there, people are constantly shoving free DVDs of Dirty Dancing in your arms.

I mean, that's what I heard on the radio this morning.
