Grr, It's Not a Bear

I'm having another bout of writer's block, so I may have to stray slightly from pop culture and venture into zoo culture. I'm about to show my girly side here, so look out.

Isn't this the cutest thing you've ever seen???

That's baby panda, Tai Shan, who was born on July 9 at the U.S. National Zoo in Washington, DC. What is it about pandas that capture everyone's hearts?

Yeah, I heard that on a NatGeo thing a while ago too. I still don't get how eating bamboo can make them so chubby. They are said to be inefficient at digesting it too because they have a carnivore's digestive system.

None of this detracts from their epic cuteness of course.

It's the eyes. The black spot around each eye makes the eyes look bigger, and people are suckers for big eyes.

True, they are not bears...hence the title 'Grr, it's not a bear'. I guess the "bear" got tagged on because they obviously look like bears and have that same lumbering walk. But, if you look at their faces you can see the similarity to raccoons. Of course, I've never caught a panda rummaging through my garbage at night. If I did, I would have to keep it!
I once (long ago) read a story in National Geographic about panda poaching in China, and how people had gotten desperate for food and shot protected pandas for the meals they would provide. However, they found that panda has a terrible taste and the family followed in the story said they would not be eating panda again anytime soon. I guess that's the rodent meat taste. Thankfully! Please don't eat the pandas!

I also read that the breeding of pandas is difficult because the males are not very well endowed, and copulation is difficult. Poor female pandas!

I check out the link to the panda cam daily. :)
