Forgotten Classic Video of the Week

One of the programmers at VH-1 Classic must be a big World Party fan, because I've seen more of their videos in the past few weeks than I even knew existed. They're not a band that ever enters my head, but when I saw their vids, I did immediately recognize the songs and remembered them as being pretty good. Still, they weren't exactly the poster boys of the '80s...so I'm not sure where VH-1's fascination stems from.

Whatever the reason for their sudden ubiquity, here is World Party's "Ship of Fools," not to be confused with the Car of Idiots. (The Far Side fans among you will appreciate that reference.)

That band never really caught my ear....

Cool tune. I've never heard of them, but then again I didn't get cable until Mtv quit playing videos.

Great link. I was borderline obsessed with them for a bit. I saw them twice in one night (opening at a large venue followed by a sweaty, packed club show). And then I saw Karl a year or so ago at another small club.

Great stuff.

Wow. Another one I never saw the video too. Then again, I didn't have cable for most of the 80s.

Then again, I don't remember most of the 80s. I must have enjoyed them.

Karl Wallinger is one of my favorite songwriters. The hits he had weren't amazing but I found myself finding a bigger appreciation for him on his Egyptology album. It came with a limited-edition 'best of' that I break out here and there.

Then again, it may be his work with the Waterboys (especially "Whole Of The Moon") that also elevates him over some of the others.
I vaguely remember this band. Thanks for posting this.
I don't remember World Party. I must have been away that day.

I miss the Far Side.

Thanks for the blast. I remember when this video was in heavy rotation on MTV. One of their later songs (Way Down Now) was pretty good too.

Sweet damn, I love me some World Party. You rawk, acolyte.

Want me to now go into a discussion on where the band members came from?
Ah, World Party, the Wonder Stuff, That Petrol Emotion, and the House of Love...where would my teenage years have been if I wasn't pretending I liked your semi-okay rock to fit in with my friends?

Completely forgot about this band until just now.
hmmm...don't know these guys. Not 100% sure I WANT to, but there's something catchy in the lyrics. Lead singer looks familiar, somehow... Maybe I went to college with him...??
