Goodbye, Blue Eyes

Today, following a long battle with cancer, legendary actor Paul Newman passed away. Newman was not only one of Hollywood's most enduring and beloved performers, but he was one of the most stunningly beautiful men in the history of this planet.

I actually got a bit misty-eyed when I heard of Newman's passing, but not because he was gorgeous or famous. I was thinking about what a shame it is that a guy like him is such an anomaly in the entertainment business these days. He seemed like a genuinely good and decent person who didn't let his success go to his head. Not only did he devote much of his off-screen life to charitable causes, but he was one of those rare Hollywood men who remained devoted to his wife. In a time when most celeb marriages can't last past 50 days, it's refreshing to remember that Newman and actress Joanne Woodward were together for 50 years.

Paul Newman was an ordinary guy and an extraordinary one at the same time. He will be missed.

"I have taken roads that I wished I had not traveled on. And I'm traveling on some pretty exciting ones, too. Just hope when you get to that great racetrack in the sky, that the balance will tip slightly into those things that you'd be proud of." - Paul Newman

I just wrote a piece about him a few days ago saying what a wonderful person and actor he is and I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

Your tribute is both touching and honest, and I thank you for it.

He will be sorely missed.

I echo your sentiments. The total opposite of what passes for class today. This guy showed it through his deeds.

And STILL gorgeous to the very end...
Excellent quote you chose!

Everyone I've spoken with today has remarked on his passing with solemnity and respect. Not many people (less yet celebs) can inspire that reaction from such a huge sampling of the general public, and indeed that is a great tribute to him. Thanks for addressing it with equal honor and respect.

I read his obit on CNN. His own quotes make him sound like an arrogant ass.

Amen to that. He was a brilliant actor and he made good dressing. When I read that he was married for 50 years, that sounded quite unusual. Thanks for this tribute.

And I sat in his race car once. I knew the guy who rented the garage where he stored it in Connecticut and he let me sit on that seat. It was thrilling but would have been a bigger thrill if Paul had been sitting in that seat at the same time.

Lovely post, Becks. A college friend was a photographer on the racing circuit, and he was one of a very few allowed to shoot Paul Newman. Syd said he was a great -- and very regular -- guy.

.netIt is an odd combination.
1)major stardom
2) being universally well liked
3) having a stable personal life
4) taking active political positions on matters of public concerns
5) making several thousand gallons of salad dressing

He seemed so down to earth. One of those horrible entertainment shows actually made my day by saying that he once said something along the lines that his salad dressing was outgrossing his films. A nice tribute, much nicer than my non-tribute.

That is the most beautiful quote--so is your post

Never before has one man touched so many people. Kind of amazing

He got his reward on earth and if there's a heaven, there too I hope

Who Does This Broad Think She Is?

My photo
I am a winsome muse who was sent to Earth to inspire an artist to turn a vacant building into the world's coolest disco roller rink. We fell in love along the way, and I foolishly gave up my immortality. When the disco craze ended and all the roller rinks were shut down, that lazy bum wouldn't get a job. We broke up and I was stuck on Earth with nothing to do and no one to inspire. So, now I write a blog.
