Love Is A Mix Tape In An Open Car*

I finally got around to reading Rob Sheffield's amazing book, Love Is A Mix Tape, and I can't recommend it enough. It made me laugh, cry, nod, think, and, of course, sing. I was happy to be reminded of songs I've always loved and some I'd forgotten, and even happier to have a list of songs I don't know that I absolutely must look up soon.

The book has also prompted me to dig out my old cassettes (some store-bought, but mostly my own homemade mixes) and unearth one old blog post. Yes, I'm posting a rerun today, but since it was written way back when The Pop Eye was just a five-month-old baby, it's going to be new to most of you. So, click on the mix tape to rewind to 2005!

*For some reason, since I bought the book, I've been singing this bastardized version of The Eurythmics' "Love is a Stranger" - Love is a mix tape in an open car/So pop it in and sing your cares away. So it warmed my heart to find many points in the book where Rob talks about how he and his wife used to like making up their own lyrics to songs. There's a little Weird Al in all of us, I suppose.

You know I hardly ever get around but what a treasure when I land here.

Ahhh... the Mix tape! You speak to the depths of my heart woman. I am forwarding this blog post to my non-bloggy but very pop culture-y and former mix tape mistress friend.

You rock my world Beck Eye, you do indeed. Rerun schmeerun, I love this blog and you too!
I love the art of the mixtape. And liner notes are ESSENTIAL.

My friend Callista and I used to make mix tapes for each other for years in high school and college. I had her entire music collection on mix tapes and she had mine. But no more. No, we've never made mix CDs, and I don't have a cassette player anymore to listen to the old mix tapes either.

*sigh*

Look at you making me feel all nostalgic. Damn you.

I still have one of those old cassette cases that open like a suitcase full Becky, I think it's time for a trip back in time. But that starts with a trip to the basement, and it's scary down there.

Hold my hand, will ya?
Dang, now I feel the need to make a new mix coming on. The mix cd is not quite as romantic, but it will have to do.
I love mix tapes. I did a blog about hooking up with an old flame of mine one night and discovering an old mix disc I made her. I put it on, and I was like, "that's a mighty fine disc! Dang, I got good taste!"

Liner notes are overrated. When you go to a show, do you ask a band member for the set list? Hells nos!!!
I remember making mix tapes on 8-track back in the day on my "other sister's" stereo. REO Speedwagon and Bad Company as a matter of fact. Bad Company was hot shit on the school bus. Beck, from now on I will post liner notes on all mix CD's I send your way. This will also help me avoid putting "Tear Off Your Own Head" on another mix CD.

Wasn't that the best damn book! Nothing says "love" like a good mix tape.
