Forgotten Classic Video of the Week

This week, I'm bringing you Ultravox, one of the first New Romantic bands, and one that wasn't very well known here in the States. The reason I know who they are is because I was always obsessed with British bands (and pretty much everything to do with England), and I kept tabs on all the musical goings on over there in the '80s via Star Hits magazine, the imported version of Smash Hits. (Kind of bizarre that they would've changed the name for American consumption...there isn't much of a difference, is there?)

Lead singer Midge Ure is forgotten in his own way - as Bob Geldof's partner in organizing Band Aid and penning the hit single "Do They Know It's Christmas." He's probably the guy in that video whom most of you see and go, "Hey, who's Mr. Ponytail?" Well, that's Midge Ure.

Here is one of Ultravox's biggest hits, "Vienna," from their 1980 album of the same name.

I LOVE "Vienna". The video's so 80s new romantic cheesy though. But the song's great. I have it on my iPod and in fact, I blasted it the other day loud enough to wake the dead.

I don't know about that moustache though, Midge Ure.

Also I had a subscription to SMASH HITS that my mum got me for my birthday one year. It had great pin ups. And song lyrics.
Whenever a British newsreader is reading a story and the word "Vienna" appears in it, they have to say it like Midge Ure sings it in this song. Like this:

"There were riots today in Austria when youths and police clashed in AAAAAAA-VIENNNNAAAAA. Cars were overturned and windows smashed in the capital. AAAAAA-VIENNNNAAA officials said the damage could total several thousand Euros. Three arrests were made."

This is by far, my most favorite album of theirs, but their first wide-release "Ultravox!" is a close second. Back then they were the first to incorporate reggae with punk, pre-dating the British Ska movement by almost three years.

Check out "I Want To Be A Machine," which had a little ska guitar and a soaring violin crescendo.

Dang, I lost my vinyl collection to mold and I need to get all my old albums on CD/MP3.
You know, that was somewhat soothing in eerie way...
