Pop Culture I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down

As three London ladies once said, it's a cruel summer. Starting with the Celebrity Death Spectacular in June, this usually fun-filled season has been a real downer where entertainment is concerned. And the gloom train just keeps rolling. Murder and suicide are putting the reality in reality TV, turns out Jacko was "murdered," Ted Kennedy's dead, and Heidi Montag is still alive.

And when something awful or depressing isn't happening, NOTHING is. Aside from Up, there haven't really been any movies worth talking about (although I've heard good things about Inglorious Basterds). Aside from Top Chef and Project Runway, summer TV is what it always is - rerunny. And aside from the latest Pearl Jam single, there hasn't really been any new music worth pushing (seriously, Third Eye Blind has the #3 album in the country right now). There isn't even any trainwrecky goodness to enjoy since Paris went MIA, Britney is evidently concentrating on losing weight and actually paying attention to her kids, and LiLo is on the best behavior a hot mess like her can manage.

So, what am I to do while stuck in this black hole? Yes, what? I'm asking you! More dumb lists? Some sort of odd Photoshop project (I never did get around to that mythical second issue of Pop Eye Candy)? Fake record reviews? Another Battle of the Netflix Stars? Tell me what you want, people.

I always like the Battle of the Netflix Stars posts.

I second what Red said. Although I know it's a long shot, I'd also love to see a pop culture trivia quiz.

It took awhile for "The Fixer" to grow on me, but I'm digging it now. Hearing them perform it live Sunday helped win me over, I think. That's also my way of saying "Hey, I saw PJ Sunday." They rocked, even if we got the lesser of the two night's setlists.
I'm shocked that people remember who Third Eye Blind are, let alone still want to listen to them.
Surely Lady GaGa is only one pair of underpants away from disaster?

Please make that bimbo Heidi go away. Far away.

I would love to read your thoughts on Sheree and Kim and the Real Housewives. Also, I love the Battle of the Netflix Stars posts, too.

I realize my street cred -- what little I ever had or had left -- goes out the window with this comment, but I'ma say it anyway: That new Third Eye Blind album? Not damn bad. Not damn bad at all. In fact, I highly recommend the song "Sharp Knife."

That said, no matter how good or bad their album, it's still quite the statement about current pop culture that "3eb" is still near the top. Even more amazing is that REO Speedwagon is right behind them at #4! (I jest. Ha.)

How about a dinner party held at your place and the 12 celebrities (past or present) that you would invite?

Perhaps a rock opera done by unlikely stars?

An article on what stars should really have on their gravestones.

just thinkin'...

Well, it looks like Netflix wins out, but I may do some dumb lists as well. And never fear - a Photoshop masterpiece is imminent.

Blanche, I can't do those movies as a Netflix Battle because I saw "I Love You, Man" at the theater. Sure, I could fudge it, but my honest nature won't allow it. Plus, I have mentioned ILYM before - here and here. Not exactly real reviews, but close enough.

By the way, I later recanted everything I said about Jason Segel and put him high up on my list of celeb crushes. Higher even than Paul Rudd!

I thought you had mentioned this movie but couldn't find in on your netflix posts...I just rented it last weekend and was plesantly surprised, latress to the manjay...

anyway, I wasn't all that impressed with Juno either, I did however think Jason Bateman was fantastic in that movie and wicked hot. Loved Nick and Nora..
